Not every tree with structural problems needs to be removed. Sometimes valuable, mature trees can be saved with proper support systems. Tree cabling and bracing are specialized techniques that provide additional structural support to weak or damaged trees. At NorthStar Hobbs Tree Services, we install professional support systems that extend the life of trees that would otherwise need removal.
Cabling and bracing work by reducing stress on weak branch unions, split trunks, or compromised limbs. These systems allow you to keep beautiful, mature trees that provide shade, beauty, and value to your property. While not every tree is a candidate for support systems, many can be successfully stabilized. We assess your trees and provide honest recommendations about whether cabling and bracing make sense or if you should consider tree removal instead.
What Are Tree Cabling and Bracing?
Tree cabling and bracing are two different but complementary support techniques:
Tree Cabling
Cabling involves installing flexible steel cables between major branches or trunks to limit movement and reduce stress on weak points. The cables are installed high in the tree canopy, typically about two-thirds of the way up the tree. They allow some natural movement but prevent branches from separating or splitting during high winds or heavy loads. Cabling is most commonly used for trees with:
- •Co-dominant stems (multiple trunks with weak connections)
- •Long, heavy branches that extend horizontally
- •Weak branch unions with included bark
- •Historical or specimen trees worth preserving
Tree Bracing
Bracing uses rigid rods installed through weak branches or trunks to provide direct structural support. Unlike flexible cables, braces are rigid and prevent any movement at the weak point. Bracing is typically used for trees with splits or cracks that need to be held together. Braces are often combined with cabling for maximum support.
When Cabling and Bracing Make Sense
Support systems are not appropriate for every tree. They work best in specific situations where the tree has value and can reasonably be preserved. Consider cabling and bracing when:
- •The tree is a valuable specimen with historical, aesthetic, or sentimental importance
- •The tree is generally healthy aside from the structural weakness
- •The weak point is reachable and can be effectively supported
- •You want to avoid the cost and impact of removing a large tree
- •The tree provides significant shade or privacy benefits
- •Local ordinances protect the tree from removal
However, support systems are not recommended for trees that are extensively decayed, severely leaning, or already in advanced decline. In those cases, tree removal is the safer and more cost-effective option. We provide honest assessments and never install support systems on trees where they will not work effectively.
Our Professional Installation Process
Installing cabling and bracing systems requires specialized training and equipment. Here is how we approach the process:
First, we thoroughly assess your tree to determine if support systems are appropriate. We look at the overall health, the nature and extent of the structural weakness, and whether the tree can benefit from support. If we recommend installation, we develop a support plan tailored to your specific tree.
During installation, our trained climbers access the upper canopy using professional climbing techniques. For cabling, we install eye bolts or eye screws in the trunk or branches at strategic points. We then run high-strength steel cables between these points, tensioning them appropriately. For bracing, we drill through the trunk or branch and install threaded rods secured with washers and nuts on both ends.
After installation, we conduct regular inspections to ensure the system is functioning properly. We recommend annual inspections to check cable tension, hardware condition, and tree response. Support systems typically last many years but do require occasional maintenance. If your tree also needs pruning or trimming, we can handle both services together.
